    Early Life
    Constance Baker Motley was born in New Haven, Connecticut on September 14, 1921.

     She is ninth out of 12 children and her parents, Rachel Baker and Willoughby Alva Baker, were emigrants from the island of Nevis in the West Indies. Rachel Baker founded the New Haven National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

    Her father, was a chef for student organizations at Yale University.  Motley attended integrated public school as a child and by the age of 15 she decided to become a lawyer after reading a book in which Abraham Lincoln described the legal profession as the most difficult occupation.
