When you're a kid everybody controls the radio but you. As the last of four siblings and two parents all sorts of radio was inflicted upon me from an early age. My dad listened to Paul Harvey and the Chicago Board of Trade futures prices, my mom listened to WABG TV Channel 6 soap operas and then a bunch of static of stations not quite tuned in, my brothers enforced a lot of country music and some '70s rock and my sister enrolled me in Huey Lewis and the News, Carole King, Rod Stewart and other soft rock.
I never got to pick a station, I just had to endure it all.
So Christmas of 1973 I got a black-leather bound transistor radio that ran on batteries and plugged in the wall.
I could park it in my room or take it with me – I did both. It was all AM all the time and I loved it.
